Norway's Statoil (STO) said late Thursday it has awarded a contract to Kvaerner Verdal for delivery of the steel jacket substructure that will support the drilling platform on the Johan Sverdrup field.

The contract is part of a letter of intent signed by Statoil and Kvaerner for delivery of two jackets for Johan Sverdrup, and continues the recent string of contracts Statoil has awarded ahead of next year's drilling start-up on the giant North Sea field.

The drilling platform jacket will be the second largest of the jackets to be constructed during the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup project. This jacket will be delivered and installed on the Johan Sverdrup field in the spring of 2018.

So far, Statoil has awarded several main contracts and equipment packages for the development worth over NOK43 billion, it said.

"More contracts will be awarded this autumn," said Kjetel Digre, senior vice president for the Johan Sverdrup development project. "We have already started on the first jacket for the riser platform at Kvaerner Verdal. So far, we are on track on the Johan Sverdrup development."
