ASTANA, Republic of Kazakhstan, October 26 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 25, day of Kazakhstan's 15th anniversary as a sovereign state, the Central Election Committee made public the list of candidates registered to run for presidential office. Presidential elections in Kazakhstan are to take place on December 4. This announcement marks the official beginning of the campaign which is to last until December 2 (i.e. 48 hours before the vote).
Five registered candidates will run for president: - Erasyl Abylkasymovich ABYLKASYMOV has been nominated candidate by the People's Communist Party of Kazakhstan which he represents in the Majilis (lower chamber of the Parliament). He is 57.
- Alikhan Mukhamediaevich BAIMENOV, 46, stands as the Ak-Jol Democratic Party of Kazakhstan candidate.
- Mels Khamzayevich ELEUSIZOV, 55. Chairperson of the Tabigat Environnement Association, he has no particular political allegiance.
- Current President Nursultan Abishevich NAZARBAYEV, 65, is running for another term. He represents the OTAN Party.
- Zharmakhan Aitbaevich TUYAKBAI (aged 58) is candidate for the Public Association "For Fair Kazakhstan" Democratic Forces Block.
Candidates running for presidential office must be over 40, have lived in Kazakhstan for over 15 years and have perfect knowledge of Kazakh language. The President is elected for a 7-year-term. According to the Constitution, a president can only be elected three times.
