Carley’s Tips for Making the Season Run
Smartly & Smoothly into the New Year:
- Get Tech
Savvy: Carley states the most important thing is
to learn to use the latest technology properly so you are getting
the most out of it. Not only do you need to be a smart shopper to
get the best value at the register, but in many instances, you need
to really educate yourself on how to use your new high-tech
purchases to get lasting value from
them. With technology getting smarter and smarter, she finds
people aren’t getting the most from their smart home
purchases.
- Stay Energy
Efficient: In addition to your stove, your refrigerator
and freezer also get a real workout over the holidays. While newer
refrigerators are much more energy efficient than older ones, they
remain one of the largest energy consumers in your house, often
accounting for as much as 15 percent of your home's total energy
usage. Carley suggests helping your refrigerator and freezer
operate efficiently and economically by keeping the doors closed as
much as possible so the cold air doesn't escape. However, leaving
the door open for a longer period of time while you take out the
items you need is more efficient than opening and closing it
several times.
- Get the most
out of your Appliances with HE Technology: If you’re
upgrading your washer and dryer or expecting lots of laundry during
the holiday season, going high efficiency (HE), you’ll instantly be
amazed by the large capacity that helps you handle the extra sheets
and towels that come with a house full of family; but you need to
do your homework and be sure you are using a low sudsing HE
detergent or you won’t see the benefits you expect (brands like
Tide® and Gain® offer quality HE formulas). Carley stresses that a
quality HE detergent will ensure you get optimal water and energy
savings, and you also need to follow the dosing instructions
carefully to ensure you have the right amount of detergent to get
that larger load really clean. Remember, a bigger load means more
dirt!
- Don't Overlook
Smaller Appliances: Carley says to consider your
convection toaster as a tiny oven for cooking meals for two to
four, warming up a side or heating up a midnight snack of
leftovers. Fast and efficient convection toaster ovens use less
energy than conventional ovens, and they don't heat up your
kitchen. Slow cookers (crock-pots) are also perfect for busy
families any time of the year. On average, they will cook a whole
meal for about 17 cents worth of electricity. Electric skillets can
steam, fry, saute', stew, bake, or roast a variety of food items -
and some can double as serving dishes.
- Stay Inspired
in the Kitchen: It can be hard to keep holiday meals
healthy and delicious with all the different tastes in a household.
There are lots of sites and apps out there to help you manage
recipes, create menus, calendars and arrange shopping lists, which
will also come in handy once the New Year’s resolutions kick in.
Pepperplate and Food52 are two Carley recommends. Before heading to
the store, create a mobile shopping list with apps like GroceryIQ.
What’s cool about this is that you can e-mail your list so
coordinating with the whole family is easy. Save money at the store
by downloading mobile coupons and extra loyalty offers using an app
like Checkout51.
- Total Control
at Your Fingertips: Grandma’s too cold? Lights-out time
for the little ones? Carley says you can control features of your
home like heat and power via apps that work from your smartphone so
you never have to move from the couch. Adjust thermostats simply
from your smartphone with apps like Nest and control lights, power
and security with apps that connect your home controls and
communicate with each other like Wink.
