Shell reported a process unit upset and flaring Tuesday morning at its Martinez refinery in Northern California.

"Unit was depressured to the flare, 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide resulted in the release," it said in a filing to the California Emergency Management Agency. The company said the cause of the problem was unknown but that it has been contained.

The refinery is located 30 miles northeast of San Francisco and has a capacity to convert 165,000 barrels a day of crude oil into gasoline and other products.

Representatives from Shell weren't immediately available to provide further details.
