NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - Seattle Genetics Inc. Monday said its
antibody, SGN-33, demonstrated multiple complete remissions at well-tolerated
doses in a Phase Ia trial that involved patients with acute myeloid leukemia
(AML).
The company also presented preclinical data indicating the drug's
anti-leukemic activity both as a single agent and when used in combination with
lenalidomide in AML.
The drug also enhanced the activity of SGN-40 when used in combination with
chemotherapy regimens in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"These clinical data demonstrate that SGN-33 has potent anti-tumor activity
combined with a favorable tolerability profile that is particularly important
for AML patients, many of whom are older and cannot tolerate the toxic side
effects of intensive chemotherapy regimens yet are in dire need of therapies
that can extend survival," the company said.
Seattle Genetics has launched a Phase Ib trial that will accrue 50
additional AML and myelodysplastic syndrome patients to further study the
single-agent response rate of SGN-33.
Results were presented at the American Society of Hematology meeting in
Atlanta.
Shares of the Bothell, Wash.-based developer of treatments for cancer and
immunologic diseases closed Friday at $12.50.
