Entries from Students in 5th through 8th Grades due by November 3, 2008; Winner to be Announced on Bubble Wrap(R) Appreciation Day, January 26, 2009
ELMWOOD PARK, N.J., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With the back-to-school season's arrival, aspiring young inventors can exercise their creative talents and help fund their future education by entering the third annual Sealed Air Bubble Wrap(R) Competition for Young Inventors (http://www.bubblewrapcompetition.com/).
Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE), the creator of Bubble Wrap(R) brand cushioning, today announced a call for entries for this year's competition, which encourages U.S. students in grades five through eight to tap into their imaginations and devise an original invention that includes the use of Bubble Wrap(R) brand cushioning.
"Over the past two years, the Bubble Wrap(R) Competition for Young Inventors has demonstrated and celebrated both the creativity and inspired thinking of America's youth," said William V. Hickey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sealed Air Corporation. "We've been pleased with the steadily growing interest and participation among students, teachers and parents and hope to foster additional interest this year." Last year's competition drew more than 1,400 entries from around the country.
Young inventors interested in entering the competition must be in grades five through eight for the school year 2008-2009. Original inventions must incorporate the use of clear Bubble Wrap(R) brand cushioning, and entries must include a visual and written description that explains the name of the invention, the purpose it serves, how it works and how the idea was formulated.
Fifteen semi-finalists will be selected in the first round of judging and announced publicly on or around November 17, 2008. Three finalists will later be announced in early January 2009 and will be flown to New York City, with a family member, for a three-day trip, where the grand prize winner will be announced on Bubble Wrap(R) Appreciation Day (January 26, 2009). The grand prize winner of the competition will receive a $10,000 U.S. savings bond, while the second and third place winners will receive $5,000 and $3,000 U.S. savings bonds, respectively. The teacher/mentor of each finalist will receive a $500 gift card.
The deadline for all entries is November 3, 2008.
Last year's winner, Hannah Haas, 13, of Charlotte, North Carolina earned the Grand Prize for her creation entitled "Sensory Wallpaper", which used Bubble Wrap(R) brand as wallpaper designed to stimulate, engage and comfort children afflicted with autism. Nicolette Mann, 13, of Christiansburg, Virginia, earned second place for her multiple flying kite kit; and Max Wallack, 11, of Natick, Massachusetts, won third place for his adjustable wrist cushion designed to help alleviate and prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.
The Bubble Wrap(R) Competition for Young Inventors is sponsored by Sealed Air and administered by the National Museum of Education. More information on the competition, including photos of last year's winners, can be found at http://www.bubblewrapcompetition.com/.
