SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - The Sand Gnats minor-league baseball team will be sold
to an Atlanta-based ownership group.
Jason Freier, chief executive officer of Hardball Capital, which is
purchasing the team, says his company has finalized a contract with owner John
Simmons.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Baseball officials must approve the sale.
Freier says his group approached the Illinois owner in October. He says he
would like to keep the team's New York Mets affiliation, which expires at the
end of the 2008 season.
Hardball Capital has owned the Wizards baseball club in Fort Wayne, Ind.,
since February 2006.
In December it sold the Salem, Va., Avalanche franchise to Fenway Sports
Group.
