PLEASANTON, Calif. (AP) - Grocer Safeway Inc. said Wednesday its board of
directors increased the company's stock buyback authorization by $1 billion.
The increase brings the company's total authorization to $5 billion.
By the end of its first quarter, the company had purchased about $3.55
billion shares.
Safeway had about 438 million shares outstanding, as of April 23.
