Business-software firm SAP SE plans to announce a new business-analysis product in coming weeks, ramping up competition in a competitive field for technology intended to glean insights from corporate data.

SAP's new offering, known internally as Project Orca, is pitched as providing the technology businesses need to harness data for decisions about their operations, from behind-the-scenes number crunching to Web-friendly data graphs for corporate workers, said Steve Lucas, SAP's president of platform solutions.

SAP, which analysts say has the largest share of the market for business-analysis software, arrives as Amazon.com Inc.'s Amazon Web Services unit is preparing its first foray into the same market.

SAP's entry into the $143 billion market for business data analysis may complicate its relationship with Amazon. The two companies now collaborate on AWS technology that lets companies run SAP software, commonly used for essential corporate chores like tracking inventory and maintaining financial records, on Amazon's cloud-computing network instead of on their own internal facilities.

An SAP spokeswoman declined to comment on the potential for competition with Amazon. A spokeswoman for AWS didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

SAP said its new software differed from rival offerings in giving companies the ability to spot trends gleaned from every digital nook, such as tying an increase in warranty claims in one part of the country to a local uptick in air pollution.

"That to me is more than visualization of data," Mr. Lucas said.
