Medical-equipment company Hologic Inc. (HOLX) and health insurer Centene Corp. (CNC) will join the S&P 500, while drilling services company Ensco PLC (ESV) will move from that index to the MidCap 400.

The changes will take place after the close of trading on March 29, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Another S&P 500 spot opened with Exelon Corp.'s (EXC) purchase this week of fellow component Pepco Holdings Inc.

Inclusion in the S&P 500 often helps stock prices as index-tracking funds buy shares.

Hologic was up 2% to $35.04 and Centene rose 1.5% to $64.71 in recent after-hours trading. Earlier Thursday, Centene completed its purchase of Health Net Inc. The cash-and-stock deal was initially valued at about $6.3 billion.

Ensco was down five cents to $10.55.
