LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Rank Group Plc. said Her Majesty's Revenue and
Customs (HMRC) has appealed the decision of the VAT and duties tribunal,
relating to the Rank's 36.3 million pounds claim for VAT paid on interval bingo.
The company said it expects that the appeal will be considered by the High
Court during 2009.
On May 22, Rank Group had said the VAT and duties tribunal had accepted the
company's claim for repayment of 36.3 million pounds related to exemption from
VAT of certain forms of interval bingo in Mecca Bingo clubs.
The claim was submitted to HMRC in 2006.
The tribunal ruled that the application of VAT to interval bingo in Mecca
Bingo clubs is in contravention to European Union laws on fiscal neutrality and
this is the decision that HMRC has now appealed.
