LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Defence firm Qinetiq Group PLC said the US
government has ordered its SPO security screening equipment as part of a package
of measures to increase security at US ports and airports.
Qinetiq said the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had bought
12 of its SPO threat detection system units under a contract of undisclosed
value that allows for extra purchases during the next two years.
The units comprise cameras which use advanced millimetre wave technology to
determine whether there are any "cold" objects, such as metals, plastics and
ceramics concealed under a person's clothing.
The agreement follows recent operational trials of SPO technology at the
Staten Island ferry terminal and Pier 90 in New York City.
Qinetiq said the SPO system is particularly effective in busy environments
as it can detect concealed threats, that might be explosive devices, from many
metres away, without asking passengers to walk more slowly.
