30 June 2009
l Production of 170 kt of copper cathode equivalent from own material in H1 2009
§ An increase of 8% on H1 2008
§ Production benefited from more efficient management of production facilities
and processing of materials, including:
- processing of stockpiled ore
- raised output at two mines (South and Nurkazgan West)
- improvements made in equipment availability and recovery rates
l By-product output in H1 2009 also benefited from a reduction of work in
progress and increased recovery rates at concentrators
§ Gold production of 67.9 koz, an 8% increase compared to H1 2008
§ Silver production increased 10% to 9,145 koz
§ Zinc in concentrate output increased 15% to 76 kt
l Kazakhmys Power
§ 11% increase in power generation in Q2 2009 from Q1 2009 due to improved
customer demand in the quarter
§ Decline in power generation of 32% in H1 2009 year-on-year, reflecting lower
economic activity in Kazakhstan
Oleg Novachuk, Chief Executive Officer, said "These are strong results, and
reflect the successful effort that has been made since the start of the year to
improve operational effectiveness. At the end of last year we suspended
production at four high cost mines, but we have raised output elsewhere and
processed previously mined ore, which has lifted final output. Given the
progress made in reducing stockpiles, output is likely to be lower in the second
half, but we remain on track to meet our full year target. The production
performance to date has been encouraging and a credit to the operational
management teams."

Summary
Three key issues have influenced production in the first half of 2009, compared
to the previous year:
1. Four higher-cost mines were suspended at the end of 2008, but this has been
offset by improved operational efficiency at our producing mines, together with
increased production at South and Nurkazgan West mines
2. Inventory and work in progress have been sharply reduced throughout the
production chain
3. The weather in H1 2009 was mild, compared to H1 2008 when severe
weather negatively impacted production
Copper Production
At the end of 2008, in response to lower copper prices, we temporarily suspended
production at some higher cost mines. These mines produced around 3 million
tonnes of ore in H1 2008. Output benefited from recovery of production at South
mine, in the Zhezkazgan complex, and the ramping up at Nurkazgan West,
Karaganda region, which together added around 1.26 million tonnes. More
efficient management of the continuing operations, including the transfer of
some equipment and personnel from the suspended mines, also helped to offset the
reduction from the suspended mines. As a consequence, ore output in H1 2009
declined by just 1.5 million tonnes, or 8%, compared to H1 2008.
Ore output within the period increased by 6%, from 7,760 kt in Q1 2009 to 8,253
kt in Q2 2009, with modest increases across all four regions. Karaganda region
saw the most significant increase with the ramping up of Nurkazgan West
underground mine which began production in February 2009.
Copper grades in H1 2009 and Q2 2009 were slightly lower than H1 2008 and Q2
2008, mainly because of the suspension of operations at the high grade Akbastau
mine, due to the level of transportation costs, in the Karaganda region. This
was partially offset by improved grades at Zhomart mine in the Zhezkazgan
complex and the suspension of output at the low grade Kounrad mine. There could
be further modest reductions in grade through the second half of the year, based
on the current mine plan.
In the first six months of 2009 the production of copper in own concentrate
increased by 5%, despite the lower ore output and grade. This was mainly due to
the processing of stockpiled ore, which contributed just under 15 kt of copper
in concentrate, and improved recovery rates at concentrators. Production of
copper in concentrate from own material in Q2 2009 increased by 4% over Q1, to
91 kt, reflecting the increase in mined metal.
In H1 2009 copper cathode equivalent production was 170.1 kt, an increase of 8%
over H1 2008. Copper cathode equivalent production from own concentrate in Q2
2009 increased by 8% to 88.2 kt, compared to 81.9 kt in Q1 2009.
These rises reflect the increases in production of own copper in concentrate.
In Q2 2009 11.3 kt of copper in concentrate (equivalent to 10.9 kt of finished
cathode) was sold directly to China and not converted to cathode.
Copper rod production in Q2 2009 was slightly higher than in Q1 2009, reflecting
a modest increase in demand in the domestic market.Production remains
significantly below the level of 2008, when more cathode was being processed
into rod due to higher margins being available in the Chinese market.

Zinc by-product
Zinc in concentrate production during H1 2009 was 15% higher than in H1 2008,
benefiting from the timing of receipts of material from third party processors,
the processing of stockpiled ore and improved recovery rates at concentrators.
This improvement was in spite of the significant decrease in zinc metal mined
with the planned suspension of output at Akbastau and Abyz mines.
These benefits were mainly seen in the first quarter. Zinc concentrate
production in Q2 2009 was 8% below Q1 2009, due to a decline in grades in the
East Region, which led to lower zinc metal in ore.
Silver by-product
Production of silver from own material increased by 10% in H1 2009 and was 6%
higher in Q2 2009 than Q1 2009. There was a reduction in silver metal in mined
ore, but this was significantly offset by lower levels of work in progress.
Gold by-product
Gold metal in mined ore reduced in H1 2009 following the temporary suspension of
production at Abyz, Kosmurun and Akbastau mines. This did not affect gold
production, which increased by 8% compared to H1 2008, due to a reduction of
work in progress, particularly the processing of stockpiled gold rich Abyz ore.
Abyz, in the Karaganda region, should restart extraction in Q3 as the stripping
work has been completed and stockpiles have been reduced. Recovery rates for
gold improved during the period, notably at the Karagaily concentrator, where
new press-filters and flotation equipment were commissioned in May 2009.

Ore extraction of 11,961 kt during the first six months of 2009 was slightly
below the prior year period, however there were a number of operational changes
in the region. There was a reduction in output from West mine of just over 1,000
kt, where most of the operations were suspended due to their high operating
cost, with selected sections re-allocated to South and East mines. There was,
however, an increase in production of 900 kt at South mine, where output was
reduced in 2008 due to repair work on the main shaft lifting equipment.
Ore extraction at the Zhezkazgan complex increased by 2% compared to Q1 2009.The
main increases were seen at South mine and at the North group of mines, where
the short life open pit at Taskora has temporarily lifted output. These
increases were partially offset by decreased production at Annensky mine, where
extraction is deepening as the mine matures.
The overall average copper grade in Q2 2009 remained unchanged at 0.87%,
although there were some variations within the region. The changes in production
of copper in concentrate at Zhezkazgan complex largely reflect the change in
quantities of metal mined.
As previously reported, one of the furnaces at Zhezkazgan has been suspended.
Copper cathode production from own concentrate during Q2 2009, therefore, was
21% lower than in the previous quarter. However, sales of copper in concentrate
to China from Zhezkazgan have increased to 11.3 kt in Q2 2009. Surplus copper
concentrate from Zhezkazgan is also being transported to the Balkhash complex
for processing. These changes are allowing the furnaces within the Group to
operate more efficiently and are assisting Kazakhmys to develop a presence in
the concentrate market.
Copper rod is now mostly produced for the domestic market, as a result of the
lower margins available. Production slightly increased in Q2, reflecting a
modest increase in demand in the local market, but remains behind the levels of
2008, due to the absence of sales to China.

Ore output was slightly ahead of Q1 2009, as extraction increased at both Sayak
and Shatyrkul mines, benefiting from the increased availability of drilling
equipment. The lower ore extraction reported in H1 2009 compared to the
corresponding period in 2008, was mainly due to the suspension of operations at
the low grade Kounrad mine at the start of 2009.
The average copper grade in Q2 2009 decreased to 1.28% from 1.37% in Q1 2009,
due to lower grades and higher output at Sayak mine.
The production of copper in concentrate was unchanged in Q2 2009 from Q1 2009,
as the metal in mined ore only slightly increased, as lower grade offset the
higher production volume.
The decrease in ore output in H1 2009, compared to H1 2008, did not impact the
metal in ore output due to improvements in grade. As a consequence, the copper
in concentrate production was higher than in the corresponding period in 2008.
Copper cathode production from own material increased by 15% to 52.8 kt in Q2
2009 from 45.8 kt in Q1 2009 reflecting the 6% increase in copper in concentrate
production across East, Karaganda, Balkhash regions and the transfer of
additional concentrate from Zhezkazgan.

Ore extraction in Q2 2009 was in line with Q1 2009. Decreased production from
Artemyevsky mine was offset by higher output at Nikolayevsky and
Yubileyno-Snegirikhinsky mines. At Artemyevsky mine backfilling work is required
and this is constraining production. The increase in output at
Yubileyno-Snegirikhinsky mine reflects the transfer of additional personnel and
equipment from the suspended Belousovsky mine.
The higher average copper grade in H1 2009 of 2.90%, compared to 2.85% achieved
in H1 2008, arose from increased production and higher grades at Nikolayevsky
mine and the suspension of production at the low grade Belousovsky mine, which
was partly offset by the decrease in grade at Orlovsky mine.
The 6% improvement in production of copper in concentrate in H1 2009 compared to
H1 2008 was due to a higher volume of mined metal in ore and an improvement in
recovery rates achieved by transferring the processing of ore produced at
Yubileyno-Snegirikhinsky mine from the Nikolayevsky to the Belousovsky
concentrator, which has shown the best recovery rate.

Ore extraction in the region for Q2, compared to Q1, has significantly increased
as the Nurkazgan West underground mine ramped up its production. At Abyz mine,
stripping work has been conducted over H1 2009 and stockpiles have been reduced,
such that production is scheduled to recommence in Q3 2009. Output in Karaganda
in H1 2009 is below the level achieved in the same period in 2008, due to the
planned suspension of Akbastau mine.
The average copper grade achieved in Q2 2009 was 1.02% compared to 0.70% in Q1
2009, reflecting the increase in output and grade at Nurkazgan West mine. The
lower average copper grade reported for H1 2009 reflects the suspension of the
high grade Akbastau mine.
Copper in concentrate output increased from 4.4 kt in Q1 2009 to 6.4 kt in Q2
2009. The increase reflects the increase in metal in mined ore from Nurkazgan
West mine and from the processing of stockpiled ores from the Abyz and Akbastau
mines.
Production of copper in concentrate in H1 2009 is slightly below the
corresponding period of 2008 and does not reflect the substantial decrease in
metal in mined ore. This is due to processing in the prior year of ores from
Kosmurun, Akbastau and Nurkazgan mines at concentrators in the East and Balkhash
regions. In addition, there was an accumulation of stockpiled ore during 2008,
which was processed in H1 2009.

Ore extraction decreased from Q2 2008 due to the closure of the Zhaima deposit
in September 2008, but was significantly higher than Q1 2009 due to normal
seasonal factors.
The average gold grade is lower than 2008 and Q1 2009 levels due to a change of
mining activity to areas of lower ore grade.
The gold doré production is similar to Q2 2008 but is significantly higher than
Q1 2009 due to the normal seasonal changes, where colder weather impacts the
leach heap technology used in the production process. The gold doré production
in H1 2009 decreased only slightly compared to the same period of last year.
Grades are lower, but to date, the closure of Zhaima mine has had limited
impact, with the processing of previously mined ore.

kazakhmys Petroleum
Kazakhmys Petroleum is continuing its work programme at the Eastern Akzhar
exploration block. The testing process at the first deep well encountered some
technical difficulties, which are currently being rectified and the
analysis should be resumed in Q3 2009.
The infrastructure at the site of the second deep well was constructed during H1
2009 and the drilling of the well has started. At the end of June 2009, 4,362
metres, out of a projected 5,200 metres, had been drilled.
Initial site work has started for the third well and drilling will commence in
H2 2009 as soon as the second well is completed.

* Period from acquisition on 29th May 2008
The 7% decline in coal output in H1 2009 compared to H1 2008 reflects the
general decrease in demand due to the challenging economic conditions in
Kazakhstan. Coal extraction decreased in Q2 2009 by 17% compared to Q1 2009
reflecting the seasonal decrease in coal sales.
Demand for electricity reduced significantly in Q4 2008 and has generally
remained low in 2009. The 11% increase in power generation at Kazakhmys Power in
Q2 2009 was due to the addition of a new customer and a slight increase in power
consumption by existing customers.
The 32% percent decrease in electricity generated in H1 2009, compared to H1
2008, was largely driven by lower demand from industrial customers, reflecting
the weaker economic environment.
Net dependable capacity1 in Q2 2009 is flat compared to Q1 2009. For the first
six months of 2009, net dependable capacity increased by 190 MW, compared with
the same period of 2008, due to the major overhaul of Unit 6 in the second half
of 2008.
The major overhaul of Unit 5 started in mid April 2009. The work is expected to
be completed by the end of 2009.The current gross dependable capacity of Unit 5
is 430 MW and should increase to the nameplate capacity of 500 MW after the
overhaul. The installation of an electrostatic precipitator has commenced at
Unit 5 and should be commissioned by the end of June 2010.
1 The net dependable capacity is the real productive capacity of GRES-1. It is
calculated by taking the maximum design capacity of the generation units and
then factoring in the physical condition of the units (e.g. wear and tear),
production outages for repairs and internal consumption of electricity
