LISBON (Thomson Financial) - Portucel - Empresa Produtora de Pasta e Papel
SA said that, following press reports of investment opportunities in Uruguay, it
has maintained talks aimed at analysing projects in that country.
In a statement, the paper making company said the talks are part of the
group's strategic development plan, with Uruguay as one of the investment
opportunities under analysis.
In a recent interview, Pedro Queiroz Pereira, CEO of Portucel's parent
Semapa SGPS, said that Semapa has the financial capacity to invest over 2 bln
eur in short and medium-term projects both in Portugal and in overseas markets,
with the focus on its Portucel unit.
The CEO said that Semapa is considering investing in new pulp plants and
forestry for Portucel overseas, with "negotiations more advanced in Uruguay and
Brazil, though with nothing concrete," while Angola and Mozambique are also
being looked at.
