GRAFTON, N.Y., Sept. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG), a leader in providing clean, reliable on-site energy products, has installed two GenCore(R) fuel cell systems to provide backup power for a New York State Police radio tower in eastern Rensselaer County.
The continuous availability of its radio system is considered critical to the ability of the New York State Police to respond effectively to emergencies and ensure public safety. At the Grafton tower, which is on the outer reaches of the statewide network, Plug Power's fuel cell systems will provide the extended run capability needed for continuity of operations during a lengthy grid outage.
Installed in tandem, the two GenCore systems can provide a combined maximum of 10 kilowatts of power. The emergency response radio tower requires approximately 7.5 kilowatts. In addition, each fuel cell system has enough stored hydrogen to provide backup power for 72 hours without refueling.
"The reliability and scalability of the GenCore product line creates a compelling value proposition for government agencies in the process of upgrading their radio networks and other emergency service systems," said Allan Greenberg, Plug Power's Vice President of Sales. "The Grafton installation is yet another example of the value that fuel cells can bring to mission critical operations where downtime is not an option." The Grafton systems are the last of 22 installations funded by the New York Power Authority (NYPA) as part of a program to deploy fuel cells for backup power at public safety communications facilities across New York State.
About GenCore(R) The GenCore product line includes backup power products for the telecommunication, uninterruptible power supply and electric utility markets. The hydrogen-fueled GenCore 5 kilowatt backup fuel cell system is available in seven configurations to serve the broad needs of these diverse applications.
