PHOENIX, Feb. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/
-- Today, Teamsters Local 104 extended unfair labor practice
picket lines from Phoenix to US
Foods facilities across southern California, affecting the nation's
second-largest foodservice provider's Corona, La
Mirada and Vista, Calif.,
operations.
The strike began Thursday in Phoenix, where more than 200 US Foods
warehouse workers, drivers and mechanics who have been working
without a contract for four months walked off the job to protest
the company's unfair labor practices. The company has refused to
offer a fair agreement that includes affordable health care while
it retaliates against union members for exercising their protected
rights.
More than 100 US Foods transportation workers in Corona, Calif., are also working without a
contract. US Foods has failed to reach an agreement on affordable
health care and language that protects job security for drivers
represented by Teamsters Local Unions 848 and 542 in California.
Another 300 Teamsters, represented by Teamsters Local Unions 63,
87, 630 and 986, are employed at the La
Mirada and Vista
facilities, and are supporting their fellow workers from
Arizona, bringing the total of
workers affected by US Foods' violations of federal labor law to
nearly 600.
"It shouldn't have to take a strike line for US Foods to respect
its workers and the law. US Foods workers are sending a clear
message that they are united and won't stand for how they are being
treated," said Andy Marshall,
Secretary-Treasurer of Local 104 in Phoenix.
In Phoenix, US Foods is under
investigation for violations of federal law, including bargaining
in bad faith, disciplining workers for union activity, refusing to
hire workers due to their union affiliation and denying workers
access to their representatives, among other violations.
