SAN FRANCISCO (Thomson Financial) - Pfizer Inc. will pay a $975,000 civil
penalty to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Air Act at its former
manufacturing plant in Groton, Conn., the Justice Department and Environmental
Protection Agency said Monday.
The alleged violations, which occurred between October 2002 and December
2005, arose from a failure of Pfizer's leak detection and repair program
at the Groton plant, the DOJ said.
The settlement was the first of its kind in federal court under regulations
designed to control the emissions of hazardous air pollutants from
pharmaceutical manufacturing operations, the agency said.
Shares of Pfizer, a New York-based pharmaceutical company, were trading up 3
cents at $17.36.
