SAN FRANCISCO (Thomson Financial) - Pfizer Inc. said Monday an observational
study of more than 186,000 patients has shown that new statin users who took the
company's cholesterol-reducing drug Lipitor were "significantly" more likely to
stay on their medication compared with those who took simvastatin.
The study reviewed one of the largest U.S. managed care claims databases,
the New York-based pharmaceutical giant said. The results were published in the
July issue of Current Medical Research and Opinion.
"This observational study provides important real-world insights into statin
usage patterns and suggests that the choice of statin may have a significant
effect on whether a patient remains on their prescribed medication," said
Rochelle Chaiken, vice president of Pfizer's global cardiovascular and metabolic
medical team, in a statement.
The company's stock was down 1.4% at $17.50.
