KUALA LUMPUR--Malaysia's national oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Bhd. (PET.YY), or Petronas, said Friday it has picked LyondellBasell Industries' (LYB) technologies for its planned polypropylene plant.

Petronas said LyondellBasell's process technologies for its 900,000-metric-ton-a-year plant would produce polypropylene products used in wide-ranging industries from automotive to household products.

Houston-based LyondellBasell is currently preparing the front-end engineering and design work to develop a detailed scope, execution plan and cost estimate for the plant and is expected to complete it by February.

"The engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning phase is scheduled to start in November 2015 and the plant's mechanical completion is expected in July 2018," Petronas said.

The plant is part of Petronas's so-called Pengerang Integrated Complex project in the southern Malaysian state of Johor that could cost as much as $27 billion. It is aimed at strengthening Petronas's presence in the Asian chemicals market.
