KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia--Petroliam Nasional Bhd. and BASF SE
(BAS.XE) said Tuesday they plan to build a polyisobutene production
plant at the site of their existing joint venture in the Malaysian
state of Pahang.
The plant will produce up to 50,000 tons of highly reactive
polyisobutene, an intermediate product used in manufacturing high
performance fuel and lubricant additives, the companies said in a
joint statement. The plant is expected to begin production in the
final quarter of 2017.
Malaysia's state-owned Petroliam Nasional, or Petronas, teamed
up with Germany-based chemical producer BASF in 1997 to operate an
integrated complex in Kuantan, Pahang. BASF and Petronas hold a 60%
and 40% stake, respectively, in the joint venture.
