Brazil's Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR), or Petrobras, said its refinery in Pasadena, Texas, was shutting down a fluid catalytic cracking unit, or FCCU, in preparation for upcoming maintenance work.

In a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the refinery added that "while preparing the FCCU for the upcoming turnaround, fresh catalyst was being reduced." This and other related actions caused emissions that began Monday and lasted 36 hours, it added, and more emissions are expected in coming days.

Petrobras' 110,000-barrel-a-day refinery is located in the Houston area.
