ALACHUA, Fla., June 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Oragenics, Inc. (AMEX:ONI) announced today its plans to initiate a human study for its proprietary oral probiotic product, Probiora3(TM). Subject recruitment will begin within a month. The study is designed to determine the effects of the mouthrinse on oral health, and will involve twenty subjects who will use the Probiora3(TM) mouthrinse twice daily for one to two months.
Dr. Jeffrey Hillman, Oragenics' Chief Scientific Officer, stated, "Probiora3(TM) is expected to provide a novel approach for maintaining oral health. The human mouth contains hundreds of different types of bacteria, some of which are good and some of which are bad with regard to the health of the human host. The key to maintaining good oral health is to keep the balance of bacteria in favor of the good bacteria that support healthy gums and teeth." Dr. Robert Zahradnik, Oragenics' president and CEO, said, "Probiora3(TM) is designed to support the balance of bacteria in favor of health, and is an all-natural product containing active ingredients that are already found in nearly everyone's mouth. Americans alone spend more than $700 million on mouthrinse products annually. We believe that our probiotic product represents an absolutely unique entry into this consumer product category." Probiotics is defined as the administration of live bacteria to confer a health benefit and is typically associated with products such as yogurt that contains live bacterial cultures for maintaining gut health. Probiora3(TM) is a proprietary blend of three natural strains of oral bacteria that have been clinically associated with healthy teeth and gums. Preclinical data indicate that Probiora3(TM) can maintain levels of key bacteria that are necessary for healthy gums and teeth, and it also offers the potential for whitening teeth and decreasing the levels of chemicals in the mouth that, in part, result in bad breath. Animal studies support the safe, long-term use of the product in humans. If the human study data are supportive of the claims for Probiora(TM), Oragenics plans to finalize ongoing licensing discussions for Probiora3(TM) with one or more potential partners.
