FRANKFURT--Worker representatives for German car maker Opel said Friday they were open to talks with PSA Group in the event of a sale by Opel parent General Motors Co. (GM) to the French company, noting that such a deal could have advantages.

The main criterion for talks would be recognition of existing agreements for Opel and its U.K. sister company Vauxhall, especially commitments on employment and investment, the German and European works councils and labor union IG Metall said in a joint statement.

"European employee representatives are able to see opportunities arising from the creation of the second-biggest car manufacturer in Europe," which could help Opel confront challenges facing Europe's auto industry, they said.
