New Quay's old cottage restaurant The Port of Call has been
taken over by new management. After being run by the same owner for
over thirty years it has now been sold and internally refurbished
to a very high contemporary standard. The aged menu has had a shake
up too and now focuses upon no nonsense wholesome food
cooked fresh to order.
New proprietors Mel and Jared
Newman have injected a new lease of life into the business
following a closed period for complete refurbishment. After an
extended travelling work life through Asia they have settled in the
beautiful harbor village of New Quay, West Wales. When asked how New Quay compares
to travelling Asia Mel said: "New
Quay has a beautiful rugged coast line with visible mountain ranges
and playful dolphins in the bay. It's as stunning as the Chinese
Karst mountains." The new Port of Call offers a relaxed
dining experience in a modern and friendly environment. Dinners can
expect a warm and proud welcome from Mel who will happily make time
to chat about New Quay and the restaurant's heritage including
playing host to actors Paul
Schofield and Richard Burton
during the 50's.
The revived menu has been developed to offer something for
everyone with an emphasis on simple unassuming meals sourced from
local suppliers. Chef and previous engineering lecturer Jared said:
"I like to offer the type of meals I enjoy to eat, unpretentious
hearty portions."
The Port of Call is experiencing a reputation boom since the
take over with an outstanding climb in rankings on Trip Advisor
from 18 of 23 to 3rd , overtaking many other long
established restaurants in the area. Customer comments include
"Excellent value, lovely ambiance," "very welcoming and amazing
with the kids" and "London class
at super quality."
The Port of Call is open for evening reservations through the
week and lunch and dinner during the weekends. With limited
availability for Christmas lunch bookings are now being taken. Book

New Year's Eve and private parties.
