- Nokia's XGS-PON technology enables Elisa to deliver new
high-speed services to customers in Ostrobothnia region
18 April 2017
Espoo, Finland - Elisa, a leading telecommunication,
information communication technology (ICT) and online service
company in Finland, successfully completed a field trial of Nokia's
XGS-PON technology, achieving the country's fastest broadband
speeds. With 10Gbps symmetrical (downstream and upstream)
capabilities, the use of XGS-PON will allow Elisa to
cost-effectively deliver ultra-broadband access needed for new
high-speed, high-quality residential and business
services.
Finland is one of the leading countries in Europe for
ultra-broadband adoption, and demand for high speed Internet and
broadband access continues to grow steadily, with more than 50% of
Finnish households having access to a fixed ultra-broadband
connection of 100 Mbps*. Additionally, with interconnected Internet
of Things (IoT) devices making residential dwellings increasingly
'smarter', customers are increasingly seeking new services that can
support the array of sensors, plugs and other connected items they
use in their homes. This makes Finland a perfect test bed for
innovative new ultra-broadband solutions.
The field trial of Nokia's XGS-PON technology demonstrates
Elisa's commitment to continually develop the capabilities and
speed of its network.
Matias Castrén, Head of Broadband Subscription Business at
Elisa, said: "Utilization of the new XGS-PON technology
means high-speed and higher-quality fixed broadband connections.
Faster and better connections are needed for the new TV and video
services, and increasingly higher quality video technologies such
as the 4K technology. In addition, the increased number of devices
of households using the Internet connection require higher
bandwidths."
Federico Guillén, president of Nokia's Fixed Networks
business group, said: "With the increasing demand for more
capacity, next-generation fiber technologies like XGS-PON are
becoming more widely adopted as operators like Elisa look to
deliver enhanced services to customers. With 9 deployments and more
than 40 trials of next generation technology globally, we were able
to bring our expertise to Elisa and demonstrate how our XGS-PON
solution could help them evolve their network in line with
demand."
Overview of the technology used in trial:
- The XGS-PON trial with Elisa includes Nokia's 7360 ISAM FX with
universal next generation PON solution and 7368 ISAM ONT
Did you know:
- Nokia is a leader in next-generation PON technology with the
world's first XGS-PON deployment with China Mobile, and over 40
trials of the technology globally. Nokia's universal TWDM solution
with fixed wavelengths, announced in Feb 2015, led to
standardization of XGS-PON in 2016.
- With this win, Nokia keeps on growing its next-generation PON
customer base.
