The Fundación has launched a new edition of its awards, which recognize the commitment of the people and institutions who have made outstanding contributions to society in the fields of science, culture and the humanities.

The awards, which are international and come with a cash prize of 30,000 euros each, are granted in five categories:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award, José Manuel Martínez Martínez. This recognizes people who have had a prolific and exemplary professional trajectory in the service of people and society. When deciding this award, the jury will take into account the candidate's selfless commitment to their professional activity and the ways society has benefited.
  • Award for the Best Social Action Initiative. This is intended to reward the merits of people or organizations who have taken significant steps to improve the integration and quality of life of disadvantaged social groups, and to help them overcome physical, financial or social limitations.
  • Award for the Best Health Promotion Initiative. This recognizes important contributions made by institutions or people to promoting health and improving quality of life. The jury will highly rate organizations that have made real progress in reducing morbidity or damage to health, as well as the innovation and originality of the initiative.
  • Award for the Best Accident Prevention Initiative. This is granted to organizations or people who have significantly contributed to the effective prevention and reduction of traffic, domestic, sports-related or leisure activity accidents. The jury will evaluate the achievements in mitigating the harmful consequences of accidents and whether the action can be transferred to other countries or regions.
  • 9th Julio Castelo Matrán International Insurance Award. This biennial award recognizes significant scientific research or innovative projects whose results have led to the expansion of insurance activities in society and contributed to economic stability and solidarity through insurance and/or social protection.

The deadline for applications for the five awards is March 1, 2018. Applications can be submitted in English, Spanish and Portuguese by the candidates themselves or by other people or public or private institutions (except for the Julio Castelo Matrán Award).

The prize winners in the latest edition, in which 740 nominations were received from Europe, United States and Latin America, were Dr Valentín Fuster Carulla (Lifetime Achievement Award); Fundación Aladina for its psychological support program for children and adolescents with cancer and their families (Best Social Action Initiative); and Dr Luis Rojas Marcos for his Abandonados project in city streets: Project Help (Best Health Promotion Initiative); and ALSA GRUPO (Best Accident Prevention Initiative).

In the previous edition (2015-2016), the Julio Castelo International Insurance Award went to the Ohio Insurance Institute for its initiative in the field of employment in the insurance sector and its contribution to reinforcing its reputation and its transferability to other countries or regions.
