NEW YORK, March 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Horror
struck the East Village yesterday as an explosion rocked the
neighborhood, resulting in a seven-alarm fire, a building collapse,
and several injuries ABC News reported. (Fire Rages After
Explosion, Collapse At East Village Apartment Building,
March 26, 2015). Around 3:15pm, an explosion was reported on the Corner
of Second Avenue and East 7th Street. As the FDNY arrived at the
scene at 121 and 123 2nd Avenue to find fire and smoke pluming
throughout. The explosion is believed to have started at building
121 and to have quickly spread to the adjacent structure.
Firefighters poured water onto the flames but had to retreat due
to the intensity of the heat and smoke. The front of the building
collapsed and pieces of the top floor of the second building
started chipping off in chunks. Early reports suspect a natural gas
leak to be the cause of the explosion, but no conclusions can be
made at this time. Preliminarily twelve people were listed as
injured, four critically, with victims being taken to Bellvue
Hospital and the burn unit at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell
Medical Center. Authorities are urging anyone who knows anyone who
lives in the building to call 311 so they can account for all
missing persons.
"This is an accident of unimaginable proportions and we can only
hope that there are ultimately no fatalities," said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar &
Andrews-Santillo LLP. "A building explosion is not something anyone
anticipates in their daily lives and the shock and horror those
affected by this tragedy must be tremendous. Our hearts go out to
the victims and their friends and loved ones. We would also like to
express our gratitude to the brave men and women who are risking
their own lives to put this fire out and prevent any further injury
to the public."
"When something of this magnitude occurs it is especially
important that victims and their families know what to do next. The
shock and injury of such an incident can leave people feeling
uncertain isolated, and it is essential that they seek the
assistance of someone who knows how to navigate such horrible
situations. Amidst such chaos, it can seem impossible to know who
is the responsible party, but without such information, protecting
your rights can prove to be quite difficult. The right advocate
will know what questions to ask, what experts to consult, and
exactly how to prove the cause of your injuries. And remember,
consulting with a personal injury attorney is free, and you only
ever pay a fee when you collect, so virtually anyone can afford
quality, invaluable representation."
