NEW YORK (AP) - Shares of SanDisk Corp. helped pull the Nasdaq 100 index up
in midday trading Monday after a report showed global semiconductor sales rose
last month.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed
on the Nasdaq Stock Market, gained 14.89 points to 1,782.46 in midday trading.
The broader Nasdaq composite added 16.92 points to 2,278.10.
Shares of SanDisk gained $1.44, or 6.8 percent, to $22.70 after the report
from the Semiconductor Industry Association.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. shares jumped $4.27, or 22.9 percent, to $22.93.
Shares of University of Phoenix operator Apollo Group Inc. rose $2.01, or
4.9 percent, to $43.22, after hitting a 52-week low of $37.92 earlier in the
session. Investors seemed to be giving the stock another look after pushing
shares down 27 percent on Friday.
On the losing side, shares of Akamai Technologies Inc. slid $1.45, or 4.9
percent, to $28.13.
Citrix Systems Inc. shares lost 98 cents, or 3.2 percent to $29.58, after
hitting a 52-week low of $29.42 earlier in the session.
And shares of Garmin Ltd. fell $1.48, or 2.6 percent, to $54.60.
