(Updates with European Commission reaction)
BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - Microsoft Corp. has filed an appeal to have
the European Commission's decision to fine the company 899 million euros
annulled.
"We are filing this appeal in a constructive effort to seek clarity from the
Court," a spokesman for Microsoft said, while declining to comment further.
A spokesman for EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes voiced confidence
that the grounds for the fine were sound.
"The Commission is confident that the decision to impose the fine is legally
founded," the spokesman said.
The European Commission in February said it had fined the U.S. software
giant 899 million euros for failure to comply with the EU executive's antitrust
decision against the company some four years ago.
The commission said the company charged "unreasonable prices" for access to
interface documentation for work group servers prior to Oct. 22 last year.
