MARKET OVERVIEW In overseas trading, six of the 15 markets that we track are showing gains, though the average percentage gain is just 0.032 percent. Asian markets closed almost flat. In Europe, the French CAC 40 and German DAX are flat too, and the FTSE in London is showing a very modest gain.
The December futures contract on sweet crude oil dropped 0.35 percent on Monday. December natural gas and unleaded gas slipped too, but December heating oil managed an advance, on fears of a harsher-than-expected winter.

DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES "ADB says flu pandemic could halt Asia growth," reads a headline in the Financial Times. The ADB refers to the Asian Development Bank, which states that besides the human toll that a deadly outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu strain would inflict, it would also cripple economic growth and trade. With new cases of bird flu occurring more frequently around the world these days (albeit in varying degrees of seriousness), Asia would perhaps be the hardest hit region, since it's home to economic powerhouse nations like Japan and China, as well as thriving financial hubs like Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The bank says that even a "relatively mild" pandemic would wreak human disaster, with 20% becoming ill and 0.5% dying from the disease. Although it doesn't sound like a lot, that equates to three million people. It identified two scenarios -- a best case and worst case. In the best case, the pandemic only affects economic growth for two quarters, reducing it by 2.6%. While that might sound damaging enough, the worst case assumes a severe crippling of demand, sending economic growth plunging by 6.5%. In turn, that would trigger a global recession and wipe global trade by 14% (US$2.5 trillion). As a reference point for this potential scenario, consider the SARS outbreak of 2003, which killed 800 people. As bad as that was (Asian GDP growth was cut by 0.6%, or US$18 billion), a human strain of bird flu could inflict a much greater amount of economic and human damage.
