MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets look to follow through on yesterday's advances, as 14 of the 15
markets that we track are currently positive. The cumulative average return on
the group stands at a positive 0.878 percent. Good news in Germany has
catapulted the Frankfurt DAX toward the top of the heap this morning. The Ifo
survey of West German business sentiment advanced for a sixth consecutive month
in October. Surpassing expectations of 92.4 the Ifo came in at 94.2, besting
September's reading of 92.0. The data would support the notion of an economic
upswing in the fourth quarter of this year in an economy currently mired in
recession.
An extremely heavy earnings docket today is accompanied by a hefty amount of
economic data, topped off by a Federal Reserve meeting. All of the prior have
the potential for generating quite a bit of volatility in today's session.
Before the market open, both weekly reports on the health of the retail sector
are due out. BTM-UBS Retail Sales Index last came in unchanged, while the
Redbook Retail Sales Index for the same period advanced by 1.2 percent. Each
passing week brings retailers closer to their D-day. With just about four weeks
worth of data separating Thanksgiving and Christmas, the group has its work cut
out. These weekly reports now start to carry more weight as we move from here.
At 8:30 a.m., September Durable Goods Orders are seen rising by 1.3 percent,
potentially reversing last month's 1.1 percent decline. This is another report
that can either validate or call into question the economic recovery. It would
be highly constructive for this figure not to post a string of negatives. At
9:00 a.m.: Federal Open Market Committee Meeting (FOMC) is scheduled to convene. At 10:00 a.m. October Conference Board Consumer Confidence figure is seen
rising slightly to 79.0 from September's sharp and surprising decline to 76.8.
Watch your screens at 2:15 p.m. as the FOMC interest rate decision and comments
are expected. While no change in interest rates is expected, the comments now
have the ability to move the market. Remember that first "tick" following the
announcement tends to portend the ultimate direction of the market into the
close.
