MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets are not looking very good this morning, as just one of the 15
markets that we track is currently positive. The cumulative average return on
the group stands at a minus 1.004 percent, led lower by the 2.85 percent decline
in the Nikkei overnight. It would seem that the Nikkei is plagued by the
persistence of the yen moving higher versus the U.S. dollar as blue chip
exporters suffered the worst of the damage overnight. It was said the Bank of
Japan was once again active in selling yen to support the U.S. dollar this
morning. Japan sold Y2.72 trillion in October to retard the currency's rise,
bringing the total amount of yen it has sold in the first 10 months of 2003 to
Y16.2 trillion.
Before the market open today, October Housing Starts are expected to have
declined by 2.0 percent versus September's surprise 3.4 percent rise. Housing
starts have had a tendency to surprise to the upside, but should the predicted
decline be hit, there should be little to no market reaction on the move from
near record highs. After the market close, Hewlett Packard will report its
fourth quarter earning numbers. Currently the Street is looking for a bottom
line figure of 35-cents per share.
