WASHINGTON, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Kirkwood, Mo., Council Member Michael H.T. Lynch was honored today by the National League of Cities (NLC), which announced a new annual scholarship for local elected officials in his name. The Michael H.T. Lynch Scholarship will provide a $2,500 scholarship to NLC's Annual Leadership Summit, designed to explore the nature and practice of local government leadership.
The scholarship was adopted today by NLC's Board of Directors in recognition for his work with the Leadership Training Institute (LTI), which offers training seminars specifically tailored to the needs of elected officials. In the resolution adopted today, Lynch was honored for "his dedication and commitment, not only to his city, but also to his underlying belief in the value of education and training for local city officials." Lynch's wife, Sallie, and his son, Patrick, attended the Board meeting.
Scott Brook, chairman of the Leadership Training Council (LTC), called Lynch "a friend and true public servant. He was passionate about learning; he was always giving to all of us of his time and his counsel. This is a true legacy in his honor." Lynch was actively involved in NLC, as a member of the Leadership Training Council, the Transportation Infrastructure and Services Policy Committee and the CityFutures Panel on Democratic Governance. Lynch had attained the Diamond Level of NLC's Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program, having participated in 26 LTI seminars since 2002.
"Mike was unforgettable. He so willingly and graciously gave of his time to build the capacity of local elected officials," said Kathleen Novak, NLC 1st Vice President, mayor of Northglenn, Colo., and former LTC chair.
Lynch was killed, along with Council Member Connie Karr and three other colleagues in a horrific attack by a gunman during a Kirkwood City Council meeting in early February. Kirkwood's mayor, Jim Swoboda, is recovering from wounds suffered during the incident.
