FRANKFURT--Germany's Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LXE.XE) and pilot
labor union Vereinigung Cockpit late Friday halted talks over
early-retirement benefits, extending a long-standing conflict that
has in the past led to flight cancellations.
Spokesmen for Lufthansa and Vereinigung Cockpit on Saturday said
that both parties couldn't agree on terms. "But we're not talking
about strikes now" Joerg Handwerg, spokesman for the pilots union,
told The Wall Street Journal.
A spokesman for Germany's biggest airline said it is optimistic
that talks will resume and that an agreement will be reached.
Both parties have been haggling over early-retirement packages
for Lufthansa pilots. The carrier had to cancel a series of flights
last year because its pilots went on strike. It has resolved a
similar dispute with the cabin crew union UFO after a one-week
strike through to Nov. 13, the longest in the airline's history,
which resulted in roughly 4,700 flight cancellations.
