NEW YORK (AP) - Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. shares jumped and helped lift
the Nasdaq 100 index Monday, after the drug developer released positive data
from a study of its experimental drug telaprevir, being developed to treat
hepatitis C patients.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed
on the Nasdaq Stock Market, gained 14.36 points to 1,781.93 in Thursday trading.
The broader Nasdaq composite added 17.92 points to 2,279.10.
Vertex shares jumped $5.23, or 28 percent, to $23.89 after the Cambridge,
Mass., company released the results.
Shares of SanDisk Corp. added $1.31, or 6.2 percent, to $22.57. A report
from the Semiconductor Industry Association should Monday that global chip sales
rose last month.
Shares of Discovery Holding Co., which runs the television channels Animal
Planet and The Travel Channel, among others, rose $1.09, or 5.4 percent, to
$21.22.
On the losing side, shares of Chinese advertising network operator Focus
Media Holding Ltd. fell $2.07, or 5.6 percent, to $35.15.
Shares of Akamai Technologies Inc. shed $1.42, or 4.8 percent, to $28.16.
And shares of Citrix Systems Inc. lost $1.23, or 4 percent, to $29.33.
