ROME--Italy's economy minister, Pier Carlo Padoan, won't attend a European finance ministers' meeting on Monday, an official at the Treasury said, after the Italian government suffered a resounding defeat at a constitutional referendum and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said he would resign.

Mr. Padoan was also scheduled to attend European Union meetings Tuesday in Brussels, but no decision has been taken on whether he will be at those, the official said.
