Irdeto Access Introduces the Epsilon Card With Irdeto FlexiFlash
The Offering Allows Operators an Alternative to Physical Smart Card Swaps
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Irdeto Access, a world leader in content
security, today announced the industry's most advanced conditional access
technology, the Epsilon Card with FlexiFlash technology. The Epsilon Card is
based on the industry's most recent microchip technology -- also used by mobile
phone companies and banks -- and employs a revolutionary new version of Irdeto
Access' time-proven security software, which allows smart card software to be
securely updated over the air after cards have already been deployed.
This technology -- called Irdeto FlexiFlash -- allows for major security and
functionality changes to the smart card software without the operational costs
usually associated with a physical smart card swap, thus speeding the
deployment time of piracy countermeasures or new services. If the security
system is ever fully compromised, then major software changes can be made in
head-end, set top box and smart card, thus restoring the integrity of the
system and continuing to ensure the operator's revenue stream.
"By offering our customers a new smart card technology on a regular basis they
can benefit from the latest technologies as soon as these become available,"
said Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto Access. "The Epsilon Card with the Irdeto
FlexiFlash technology is a clear example. It offers a software based solution
in a hardware (smart card) based environment, a combination of the best of both
worlds." The product builds on the success of the company's Version 2 and Delta smart
cards, which have been securing the revenue of more than 120 operators
worldwide for four years. The Epsilon Card is a key part of Irdeto Access'
security strategy of delivering a new smart card every 12 to 18 months, thus
limiting the potential impact of piracy by mixing card types within the
network. As with each newly introduced Irdeto Access smart card, the Epsilon
Card is backwards compatible preventing the need for changing existing set top
boxes in the field. The Epsilon Card will be available in October 2004. The
Epsilon Card is part of the content security solution based on the Irdeto PIsys
product range.
