Iraq’s Najaf International Airport to Bolster Security with AS&E’s Advanced X-ray Detection Solutions
April 04 2016 - 12:04PM
American Science and Engineering, Inc. ("AS&E") (Nasdaq:ASEI),
a leading worldwide supplier of innovative X-ray detection
solutions, announced today that it has received an order for Iraq’s
Najaf International Airport for a Z Portal® cargo screening system
and multiple Gemini® parcel inspection systems. When
combined, these systems will provide Najaf Airport with a
comprehensive detection solution for scanning incoming vehicles as
well as baggage for weapons, vehicle-borne improvised explosive
devices (VBIED), drugs, and other threats and contraband.
Demonstrating its commitment to world-class security, Najaf
Airport also entered into a five-year contract for continuing
support by AS&E’s industry-leading Service team.
“Customers with vital security missions rely on
AS&E’s proven technology to meet their detection requirements
in high-threat environments,” said Chuck Dougherty, AS&E's
President and CEO. “We are proud to have been selected by
Najaf Airport, one of Iraq’s busiest airports, to provide the
advanced technology and expert technical support it needs to
protect the safety of passengers, personnel, and
infrastructure.”
“Passengers and freight forwarders are increasingly
turning to Najaf Airport for their international air travel and
shipping requirements,” said Sheikh Faed Al-Shimary, Director
General of the Najaf Airport Authority. “We chose AS&E’s
comprehensive detection solutions because they provide rapid
inspection of vehicles and carry-on luggage in a high-security and
high-traffic environment while ensuring the flow of passengers and
commerce — and because it is well-known in our region for
delivering exceptional, responsive customer service.”
AS&E X-ray detection systems are used for
aviation screening operations by customers in Asia, Latin America,
the European Union, and Africa. For example, Hong Kong Customs
deploys the Gemini system for baggage screening operations at Hong
Kong International Airport. Taiwan Aviation Police deploys the Z
Portal system and Gemini system to detect organic threats and other
contraband in air cargo routed through Taiwan Taoyuan International
Airport. The Gemini 100100 X-ray inspection system was
instrumental in detecting 244 cartons of the anesthetic drug
Ketamine, one of the largest narcotics seizures in Taiwan in the
past few years.
To secure this order, AS&E worked closely with
its distributor, ASJ, in Najaf, Iraq.
Z Portal High-Throughput Cargo &
Vehicle Screening SystemThe Z Portal system is the most
comprehensive screening system available with multi-view,
drive-through screening for left, right, and top-down imaging of
cars, vans, trucks, and their cargo. The Z Portal system has a
compact footprint and is safe for drivers, operators, cargo, and
the environment, making it ideal for high-traffic locations with
space constraints. The screening system is available in two sizes —
one for large trucks, buses, and cargo vehicles, and a smaller size
for passenger vehicles. Customers include the U.S. Department of
Defense, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Abu Dhabi Customs, and
NATO.
Gemini Multi-Technology Parcel X-ray
Inspection SystemAS&E's ground-breaking Gemini systems
provide the most comprehensive threat detection available for
hand-carried items, mail, parcel, and baggage screening. Available
in multiple tunnel sizes, the Gemini systems offer the unique
capability to simultaneously detect both metallic and non-metallic
threats — even in cluttered environments. Gemini's multiple
technologies provide the most information available about the
contents of a parcel.
