JAKARTA (Thomson Financial) - Indonesian conglomerate PT Astra International
said Monday its car sales rose 89 percent to 23,594 units in February from a
year earlier, led by Toyota-branded vehicles.
Sales in February were also higher than the January level of 20,751
vehicles. Astra's market share stood at 50 percent in the first two months of
the year, making it the biggest car dealer in the country.
The company said it sold 16,183 Toyota cars in February, more than double
the 8,057 units sold a year earlier. In January, Astra's sales of Toyota reached
13,751 units.
Astra also sells other brands such as Daihatsu and Isuzu.
Astra International, which is majority owned by Jardine Cycle & Carriage of
Singapore, also produces and distributes Honda motorcycles. The company is also
involved in non-automotive businesses ranging from financial services,
plantations, mining and heavy equipment distribution.
