FARMINGTON, Conn., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Responding to the trucking industry's need to reduce idling and emissions, Carrier Corp., a business unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX), has entered into an agreement with Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) to be its exclusive distributor of auxiliary power and climate control units (APUs) in the aftermarket.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050310/CARRIERLOGO ) Effective March 1, Carrier's Transicold business unit will provide Teleflex's APU products, renamed the ComfortPro(TM) series. Carrier's worldwide dealer network will vastly expand the distribution, service and support for APUs.
The ComfortPro name reflects Carrier's recognized climate control leadership and the unit's multi-purpose utility. Teleflex entered the market in 1990 with an auxiliary heater for Class 8 trucks that became known as the Proheat unit. With the later addition of auxiliary power, the product line provided electricity for sleeper compartment air conditioning and heating, 4,000 watts of 110/120-volt household current for on-board appliances, 40 amps of battery charging and engine preheating for cold-weather starts.
"This is a terrific match for Carrier and Teleflex, as both are leaders in their respective fields, with complementary cultures and competencies," said Mark Cywilko, Carrier Transicold president. "An environmentally sound offering, the ComfortPro APU will appreciably reduce idling, resulting in lower emissions, fuel conservation, less engine wear and longer service intervals. It supplements our Deltek(TM) technology-based transport refrigeration systems with an all-electric architecture and built-in electric standby to eliminate idling at the rest areas and loading docks." "By leveraging the full force of Carrier Transicold in North America and worldwide, we will speed the growth of this product line by significantly expanding ComfortPro's distribution and service base," said Vince Northfield, Teleflex Commercial president. "We are pleased to be working with market leaders such as Carrier Transicold who share our commitment to bringing technically sophisticated products to a broader market while providing customers with superior service." ComfortPro is the most reliable, rugged and serviceable APU on the market at a time when the use of APUs is of growing importance to help conserve fuel and reduce exhaust emissions. In addition to the APU, the ComfortPro series includes a multi-function driver control panel, a climate-control unit and a shore power option that enables a trucker to plug into a standard 110/120-volt outlet.
