PITTSBURGH, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Carl Johnson of II-VI Incorporated (NASDAQ:IIVI), and his wife, Margot, have announced the formation and initial funding of the II-VI Incorporated Foundation. The Foundation commenced operation on May 1, 2007 with the purpose of fostering improvements, specifically in the fields of science and mathematics, within the secondary education systems in the communities surrounding II-VI's manufacturing facilities located in the U.S. Concurrently, the II-VI Foundation is interested in funding the research and development of new technologies at universities and centers of excellence within the U.S.
The II-VI Incorporated Foundation is planning to offer college scholarships to seniors at high schools surrounding the II-VI Incorporated domestic plant locations. Those locations include Saxonburg, PA; Dallas, TX; Temecula, CA; Pinebrook, NJ; Starkville, MS and New Port Richey, FL. The scholarships will go to students who have excelled in science and math at the high school level and are committed to the pursuit of a college degree in engineering or science. Scholarships are targeted in amounts up to $10,000 per year per student. Students will be required to stay enrolled in an engineering or science program and to maintain acceptable grades.
Additional programs will eventually be developed to encourage students from 7th grade forward to explore science and engineering career choices at an early age.
