Ninety Percent of the Largest Healthcare
Providers Rely on Citrix to Enable Secure Mobile Access to Clinical
Apps and Patient Records from Any Device
With the December 2015 deadline looming for healthcare providers
in the United States to comply with Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) criteria for adopting mobile
computing technologies, many organizations are finding that a
secure IT infrastructure is no longer a luxury, it’s a requirement.
The overall vision of these regulatory requirements is to create a
system in which patient data is captured at the point of care and
physicians have easy access to patient health information. The end
goal is to evolve from a manual data entry process to a
comprehensive system that allows access to healthcare applications
from anywhere – whether from a laptop on a cart wheeled between
hospital rooms or a clinician’s personal mobile phone. Citrix
solutions allow information to pass securely over any network so
information never actually resides on a device, but remains safely
in the data center.
Leading healthcare organizations such as Franciscan Missionaries
of Our Lady Health System, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, part of
Miami Children’s Health System, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical
Center, and Southcoast Health System have leveraged Citrix
virtualization, mobility management, and networking solutions to
provide clinicians secure mobile access to critical apps and
patient records from any device, without comprising security or
compliance. Today, 90 percent of the largest healthcare providers,
100 percent of the US News & World report top
hospitals and all of the top health information technology vendors
leverage Citrix technologies to transform their IT infrastructures
so they can maximize operational efficiencies and security while
focusing on quality patient care.
- Doctors Without (Device)
Borders: Nicklaus Children’s Hospital built an
infrastructure that enables telehealth and helps doctors securely
access, share and collaborate around patient and medical
information wherever they are. Clinicians can sign-on once to
securely access a desktop and all clinical apps, including the
hospital’s electronic medical record (EMR) system powered by
Cerner, on any device. Doctors and staff can leverage the latest
mobile devices to access corporate email and patient consent forms
to ensure sensitive information remains private.
“I need information about my patients; I need
data. Citrix technology enables me to securely access
critical patient information anywhere, anytime, on any device,”
said Dr. Redmond Burke, director of cardiovascular surgery at
Nicklaus Children’s and the founder of its Congenital Heart
Institute.
- Mobile Clinical Workstations:
Like nearly every healthcare organization in the United States,
Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS)
has had to grapple with the rapidly changing government, business,
clinical and patient requirements that are indicative of a new
healthcare landscape. From supporting electronic medical records
(EMR) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE), to enabling
secure, bring-your-own-device (BYOD) access, the IT team at FMOLHS
faced numerous challenges from delivering EMR in both inpatient and
ambulatory settings to meet meaningful use and CPOE requirements,
to mitigating the risk of HIPAA security breaches and open
workstation kiosks on hospital floors. Previously, FMOLHS had
shared desktops on each hospital floor where any employee could
walk up and log in. A clinician could accidentally save a file with
a patient’s personal health information to the shared desktop,
unintentionally enabling another user to access it at a later
point. This posed a significant risk of HIPAA breaches occurring,
with hefty associated fines. With its new secure-by-design platform
from Citrix and two-factor authentication (badge and PIN) from
Imprivata, the nonprofit no longer has to worry about potential
breaches on shared desktops.
“We’ve used Citrix to implement security
controls and prevent breaches from occurring,” said Johnny Brister,
manager of infrastructure and technology systems, Franciscan
Missionaries of Our Lady Health System. “Citrix XenApp, Citrix
XenDesktop and Citrix XenMobile have all been critical in how we
deliver essential applications or services while maintaining a very
high level of security. We started by enabling our clinicians to
walk around the hospital and still get right back into their
applications, effectively bringing their desktops with them
wherever they were in the hospital. Then we gave them the ability
to do that anywhere - on their home PC or iPad, or whatever device
they have.”
- Patient Information From
Anywhere: Using a combination of Citrix virtualization and
networking solutions, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical
Center created a datacenter that enabled clinicians to access
any application on any mobile device from anywhere, securely and
quickly. Thanks to Citrix mobile app solutions, staff and
physicians can now seamlessly access apps at the patient’s bedside
or from home, and IT can keep those apps in a secure and
locked-down environment that meets all of the HIPAA requirements
for patient healthcare records.
“Thanks to Citrix Receiver, which allows our
physicians to access the Epic application and crucial data
including images from their mobile device, they can access
everything they need from the palm of their hand,” said Damien
McKinney, virtualization architect, Saint Francis Hospital. “No
longer being tethered to a physical workstation makes such an
enormous impact on the efficiency of our clinical teams. Thanks to
Citrix technology, we can seamlessly push applications to the
physicians knowing that we are still providing the high level of
security required. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
- Safeguard Sensitive Information:
Southcoast Health System set a goal of growing aggressively
while continuing to deliver an exceptional patient experience from
staff by giving them seamless, uniform access to patient health
records on any device as they moved among increasingly distributed
settings. Recognizing a growing risk of data breaches, Southcoast
also wanted to help ensure the security of patient information. To
meet these goals, the organization, with the help of technology
partner Intrasystems, adopted a rich, integrated electronic medical
record (EMR) solution from Epic and chose Citrix virtualization as
the foundation to deliver its integrated EMR system plus 50 other
clinical and nonclinical applications. This allowed physicians and
nurses to seamlessly access and view the same patient data as they
moved among facilities. Practitioners are now able to see the same
patient information, whether a patient is in the hospital or has
been discharged to the visiting nurses service. With the Citrix
solutions, Southcoast keeps patient data safe and ensures sensitive
information remains private. The new infrastructure protects
against data leakage and controls the influx of new mobile devices,
even when clinicians bring their own devices.
“Anytime physicians or nurses are faced with
system downtime, it impacts patient care. With the Citrix platform,
we’re able to refresh, upgrade and advance the environment without
ever impacting our business, which operates 24/7, 365 days a year,”
said Mark Lacombe, director of information technology, Southcoast
Health System.
