WASHINGTON (AP) - Antitrust regulators have cleared Hewlett-Packard Co.'s
purchase of specialty computer maker Neoware Inc., according to a notice issued
by the Federal Trade Commission.
Palo Alto, Calif.-based Hewlett-Packard said in announcing the deal in July
that it paid $16.25 per share, or $334 million, for the company. Neoware makes
thin-client computers and software. Thin client computers don't have hard drives
and rely on network server computers to store memory and run programs.
The purchase is intended to spur the growth of HP's thin client business,
the company said in July. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
The FTC included the deal on a list of transactions that received an "early
termination" of their antitrust reviews. Early termination refers to the
completion of a review before the end of a 30-day period required under
antitrust law.
HP shares rose 71 cents to $49.71, while shares of Neoware rose 5 cents to
$16.16 in afternoon trading.
