LONDON--Gold Fields Ltd.(GFI) said Monday that it has suspended operations at its South Deep mine in South Africa after a 1.5 magnitude earthquake led to the death of one of its employees at the mine.

Gold Fields said the mining activities will remain suspended due to continuing seismic activity in the area and until an on-site inspection of its operations has been concluded.

Gold production at South Deep increased 87% to 140,000 ounces in the first half of the year from 75,000 ounces in the first half the previous year.

Gold Field shares were down 2.9% at ZAR73.06 a share, or $5.05 a share, Monday.
