WASHINGTON (AP) - Trade via trucks, trains and pipelines between the U.S.
and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose by 1.5 percent in
March compared with the same month last year, according to Transportation
Department data.
Surface-transportation trade between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico rose to
$70.79 billion in March, which also was up from February's total of $69.41
billion, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics said Thursday.
Surface transportation consists largely of freight moved through trucks,
rails and pipelines. About 90 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and
Mexico moves on land.
Imports rose 0.4 percent to $40.09 billion, and exports of about $30.7
billion represented a 2.8 percent increase compared with March 2007.
Trade with Canada rose 4.8 percent to $47.22 billion in March, while trade
with Mexico dipped 4.6 percent to $23.57 billion, according to the government
data.
