American International Group Inc. said former Chief Executive
Robert H. Benmosche died Friday after battling lung cancer since
2010.
Mr. Benmosche, who left the company in September after four
years as its president and CEO, had led the company through one of
the biggest bailout packages of the financial crisis, which it has
since repaid.
Mr. Benmosche, who was 70 years old, had publicly disclosed in
fall 2010 that he had cancer, without revealing the type. In the
years since, he repeatedly stated that the cancer responded well to
treatment, and by all accounts he has been active and energetic
over the years.
When he left AIG, he divulged that his cancer worsened
dramatically and made him less interested in staying at the company
into early this year as previously envisioned.
Mr. Benmosche died Friday morning at NYU Langone Medical Center
with his family at his side, the company said.
"Bob was one of the most inspirational and successful leaders in
corporate America by any measure," said AIG chairman Robert S.
Miller in a news release.
