SHANGHAI--Ford Motor Co. unveiled its new Taurus sedan in China on Saturday as part of efforts to expand there.

The Dearborn, Mich., auto maker said the Taurus would be made along with the Ford Edge sport-utility vehicle at its new factory in the Chinese city of Hangzhou.

The 2.7-liter Taurus will be "the new flagship for the Ford brand" in China, said Trevor Worthington, Ford's Vice president, product development for Asia Pacific. He spoke at a corporate event two days before the opening of the Shanghai auto show.

The Taurus was one of four models Ford showed on Saturday as part of its ramp-up plans there. Ford's first-quarter sales in China grew 9% compared with a year earlier to 296,825 vehicles, while March sales rose 1% to 104,842 vehicles.

Ford makes cars in China through a joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile Co.
