BOSTON, Nov. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Using a unique
teaching style that led to volumes of best-selling textbooks and
millions of engaged students worldwide, Jim
Stewart has excelled as an instructor, author and mentor.
Today, Cengage Learning, a leading global education company,
announced the release of three new Stewart textbooks – Calculus
8e, Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus 7e, and
Biocalculus: Calculus for the Life Sciences.
"I'm proud to release these new texts with Cengage Learning,"
said Jim Stewart. "Mathematics
equations are timeless, and we've been lucky enough to see these
books evolve over the years with our students. We add to the
knowledge in the books, but we don't ever subtract from it. I like
to keep running lists of ideas for future editions as a way to
ensure that my books remain relevant and engaging for students of
calculus."
"With the release of three new titles, we celebrate Jim Stewart's achievements and success in
engaging students through his passion for teaching and learning,"
said Sandi Kirshner, chief marketing
officer, Cengage Learning. "Millions of students worldwide have
explored calculus using Stewart's trademark style, while
instructors have turned to his approach time and time again to
inspire their students."
As one of the most widely renowned mathematical texts, Stewart's
Calculus, now in its eighth edition, displays mathematical
precision and accuracy, clarity of exposition and interesting
examples and problem sets. Similarly, Stewart and his bestselling
author team of Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, now in
its seventh edition, explain concepts simply and clearly and
problem solving and mathematical modeling are introduced early and
reinforced throughout. The authors' attention to detail and
clarity—the same as found in Stewart's Calculus —is what
lead to Precalculus becoming the best-selling precalculus
book in higher education.
Stewart's Biocalculus: Calculus for the Life Sciences,
was designed with co-author, Troy
Day, to display the correlation between calculus and
biology, using a rigorous yet informal style. The text motivates
and illustrates the topics of calculus with examples drawn from
many areas of biology, including genetics, biomechanics, medicine,
pharmacology, physiology, ecology, epidemiology and evolution, to
name a few. Students develop a sound knowledge of mathematics and
an understanding of the importance of mathematical arguments, in
addition to a clear understanding of how these mathematical
concepts and techniques are central in the life sciences.
Stewart said, "Biocalculus went in a different direction
than my usual textbooks and arose from the fact that many of my
students wanted to go into the life sciences. To fill this need,
Troy Day and I worked tirelessly to
scour literature for relevant and engaging applications of calculus
for the life sciences. It was quite exciting for me personally,
because I ventured into new territories with this book and learned
a great deal about biology in the process."
