SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) -- Weis Markets Inc., a Pennsylvania-based supermarket
chain, said Friday first-quarter profit fell 32 percent, hurt by a slowdown in
consumer spending and higher commodity and other costs.
WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP) -- Bright Horizons Family Solutions Inc., which runs
workplace child-care and early education centers, said Friday its first-quarter
profit dropped more than 40 percent, due to a large charge related to its
pending acquisition by Bain Capital Partners LLC.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said Friday that it swung to a
profit in the first quarter by focusing on higher-priced tires and strong
international markets. But the company says it will cut tire production in North
America, where sales have been sluggish.
DETROIT (AP) -- American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. reported a $27
million first-quarter loss on Friday, blaming much of the red ink on lower light
truck production and a two-month strike by the United Auto Workers.
BRANCHVILLE, N.J. (AP) -- Shares of Selective Insurance Group Inc. slipped
Friday after the insurer reported competition for customers and a tough
investing environment led to a 45 percent profit decline in the first quarter,
and it cut its forecast for the year.
