BOSTON (AP) -- Because of a hiccup in its hardware unit, IBM Corp. stock
took a hit even though the technology bellwether reported a 6 percent rise in
earnings and exceeded Wall Street forecasts. Investors were also sorting out how
much IBM is exposed to woes in the financial industry.
MCLEAN, Va. (AP) -- Gannett Co., the largest newspaper publisher in the
country and owner of USA Today, said Wednesday third-quarter earnings fell 11
percent, as revenue slipped from a year-ago period boosted by spending on
political advertising.
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Regional bank Marshall & Ilsley Corp. said Wednesday its
third-quarter earnings fell 8 percent due to rising loss provisions and a charge
related to the spin off of its technology subsidiary.
CHICAGO (AP) -- Northern Trust Corp. on Wednesday said profit surged 27
percent in the third quarter as the trust bank attracted more investments under
its custody, boosting management fees.
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Private mortgage insurer MGIC Investment Corp. said
Wednesday it swung to what could be the first in a string of quarterly losses
during the three months ending Sept. 30.
CHESTNUT RIDGE, N.Y. (AP) -- LeCroy Corp., a supplier of scientific testing
instruments, said Wednesday its fiscal first-quarter profit rose 9 percent on
higher test and measurement product sales.
